Q: Is it legal to fly with electronic charts?
A: The FAA has noted that it is legal to fly to using electronic charts. This is dependent upon which part of the FAA regulations you are flying under. Please see our Legality section for more details. JAA/EASA share a similar view, but require paperwork first be submitted before flying solely with e>charts.
Q: Do electronic charts cost less than paper ones?
A: In most cases, yes. Comparing most Jeppesen Electronic Chart Services to most Jeppesen Standard Paper Airway Manual Service, the electronic chart service can be anywhere from 5% less expensive to more than 50% less expensive for some high performance paper services.
Due to the increasing costs of fuel, paper and postage, the prices of Paper Services have and will most likely continue to increase, while electronic chart service prices have remained stable and have additional features and benefits. In many cases, you can pay for the cost of the hardware (i.e. tablet PC) with the savings from the electronic service.
In addition, through reductions in paper and weight (and reduced fuel consumption), the cost to the environment is reduced as well.
Q: What if my display goes out while I'm flying?
A: All of our electronic chart applications come with multiple licenses, which allow the electronic chart viewing application to be loaded on additional pieces of hardware for additional redundancy. All Jeppesen Electronic Chart Services include the ability to print any terminal chart in your coverage area. Many of our customers print departure, destination and alternate airports as a back up.
Jeppesen's electronic charting applications have been in use since 1996. Combine our worldwide chart coverage with today's advanced tablet PC technology and you have a safe, reliable solution for most any duration and mission type.
Q: Are electronic charts easy to use in the cockpit?
A: As with any new technology there is a learning curve, however, our applications have been developed by pilots, for pilots-even during single pilot IFR operation.
Our electronic chart applications have been optimized over the years through continuous development and feedback from our users. Touch screen tablet PCs and Internet update capability allow easy access to the most up-to-date charts and information.
Q: Do I need to purchase a tablet PC to transition to electronic charts?
A: No. But displaying the charts on a tablet PC is the best way to take full advantage of all the features and benefits of electronic charts.
However, many of our customers have made the transition to electronic charts by using their home PC* and printer. Here's what our electronic chart application allows you to do:
1. Print all the charts in a subset of your complete coverage, which is larger than the area you fly most often. Carry this custom set of charts in your aircraft (i.e. all charts in a 400 mile radius of your home airport if you rarely fly more than 300 miles from your base). This gives you all the charts you may need most of the time.
2. Every two weeks, let our electronic chart application tell you only the charts that revise in your custom coverage. This way you file fewer revisions but still have the charts you need if you get diverted.
3. Print any additional routes or charts you might need for special trips, which are outside of your custom subset but still within your total coverage area.
The result is less paper in your cockpit and you are still using paper the same way you always have. However, managing your charts electronically allows for faster and easier updates to your coverage and more "personalized" coverages for where you fly most.
Q: Can I use my PDA to fly electronically?
A: Right now, we are not supporting the tools that allow for optimal PDA functionality with our electronic products. However, we know that many pilots who are using Windows-based PDAs are operating safely and successfully with them.
